Pleito Cave

Photos of the amazing rock art found in the Pleito Cave (CA-KERN-77). Pleito Cave in the Wind Wolves Preserve contains polychrome rock art which is arguably the most complex rock art site in North America. It has 12 panels containing red, orange, yellow, blue, green, black and white pigments.

^ ^ ^ Jack Sprague from the Kern County Archaeological Society was our tour leader ..... an inspirational source of local knowledge, both past and present.
^ ^ ^ Archaeological evidence tells us this whole area was once a thriving Chumash community which incorporated the Pleito Cave site. A mortar bowl used for food preparation found close by the cave entrance.
^ ^ ^ Cupules found in a nearby area adjacent to Pleito Cave. Cupules like this are prevalent in the area.
^ ^ ^ Back to the present - bear damage done to this picnic table near the Pleito Cave site.
^ ^ ^ It is not clear why bears are interested in this table, possibly because it has absorbed the scent of food? Or maybe it is a convenient "scratching pole"?
